Ruth's Story: Family Story Ruth was born in Glasgow on 23 August 1933, the youngest of three children, to Sophia and Morris Meizenberg. She grew up in Glasgow and, in her youth, enjoyed amateur dramatics. She married Eddie Berkley, the brother of her close friend and namesake Ruth, in October 1956. They settled in the Clarkston area of Glasgow. Sons Trevor and Derek arrived in 1957 and 1960 respectively.
In 1964 she and Eddie made the big decision to sell up in Glasgow and move south to Bournemouth, eventually buying a home in Branksome Hill Road. They quickly settled into the Bournemouth Jewish community, partly helped by their love of bridge and her outgoing personality. Ruth was a good cook, enjoyed entertaining and had a wicked sense of houmour.
Ruth supported Eddie in various business ventures as well as running her own ladieswear shop, Ruth's Fashions, in Parkstone for a number of years in the 1970s. Her love of clothes remained with her throughout her life and her wardrobe benefited a number of charities following her passing!
Ruth was devoted to her family and remained close to her siblings, Lily and Isadore, notwithstanding the distance between them. With Eddie, they encouraged their sons in their education. They also ensured they were brought up in a traditional Jewish and kosher home and attended Cheder as well as shul regularly and encouraged them in their youth activities.
After their sons had left home and later married and, following the birth of their first grandchild, Nicky, they moved from Branksome Hill Road to a flat in Bath Hill Court. In retirement they enjoyed travelling and spent a number of winter months each year in Tenerife where they made a new circle of friends. More grandchildren followed over the years: Simon, Josh and Shelley. Ruth had a close bond with each of them and the expanded family were able to enjoy several Simachot, Yom Tovim and other family gatherings over the years. The grandchildren always looked forward to their trips to Bournemouth.
In later life Ruth nursed Eddie through a number of health challenges including Parkinsons. This took a toll on both of them with Eddie finally passing away 4 days before Rosh Hashonah in 2016 and a few days short of their 60th wedding anniversary.
Ruth tried to move on following Eddies passing, keeping herself busy and spending time and doting over her three (at that time) great grandchildren. She managed to enjoy a holiday in Israel with Trevor and his family before her own mobility and general health started to deteriorate. She eventually moved to the Hannah Levy home where she spent her final months and was lovingly cared for by their staff. She suffered a stroke in the summer of 2019 from which she never recovered and was finally re-united with her beloved Eddie just 2 days following his yahrzeit and 2 days prior to Rosh Hashonah of that year.
